Assam: Noted Assamese litterateur Paran Kumar Baruah passes away

NAGAON: Noted Assamese poet, critic, and former President of Nagaon Zilla Xahitya Xabha, Paran Kumar Baruah, passed away on Tuesday night at Nagaon Medical College and Hospital while undergoing treatment after a sudden cardiac arrest. He was 66. He leaves behind his mother, wife, a son, and a daughter.

Born in 1959, Baruah obtained his master degree from Guwahati University and actively took part in Assam Movement and also worked for Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad at Nagaon. Subsequently, he joined the Industry and Commerce Department, Govt of Assam, as an official and retired some couple of years ago. He was a former President of Nagaon Zilla Xahitya Xabha and Executive Member of Axam Xahitya Xabha. Baruah was a prolific writer and had written over a dozen books on various subjects, including literature, culture, and history.

Baruah’s demise sent shockwaves across the literary and cultural circles of Nagaon and beyond. Nagaon Press Club, district unit of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad and many dignitaries, including Keshab Mahanta, Minister of Revenue, and Rupak Sarmah, MLA of Nagaon-Batadroba, former AGP Minister Girindra Kr Baruah, former Congress MLA Dr Durlav Chamua, paid their tributes to Baruah, describing his death as an irreparable loss to the Assamese literary world.

Baruah was known for his contributions to Assamese literature and culture, and his works include several books on Srimanta Sankardeva, Rabindranath Tagore, and other prominent figures. He was also a recipient of several awards, including the Bhim Rao Ambedkar Award and the Michael Madhusudan Award.
