BOKAKHAT: Atul Chandra Saikia, a noted cultural activist and retired employee of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), passed away on Thursday at his native village Dhodang Gaon in Numaligarh, under Bokakhat subdivision. Saikia, who had received the prestigious President’s Award for Excellence in Service, was widely respected for his contributions to society and culture. News of his demise cast a shadow of mourning across the region. Born on February 22, 1958, Atul Chandra Saikia joined ONGC as a Chief Foreman (Diesel) on December 14, 1984. With his dedication and efficiency, he served the organization until his retirement on February 28, 2018. Notably, he was honoured with the President’s Award by then-President Pratibha Devi Singh Patil in 2008 for his outstanding service in the public sector oil industry.
Deeply rooted in the cultural fabric of Dhodang Gaon, a region renowned for its rich folk traditions, Saikia was immersed in cultural activities from an early age. He actively participated in Bihu, Bhaona, Raas, and social dramas. Closely associated with senior cultural workers, he contributed through singing, instrument playing, Chari-Chara, and acting in traditional performances. His strong connections with various social and cultural organizations made him a guiding figure in the community.
His death has deeply saddened all who knew him. Various social organizations expressed their grief and offered condolences to the bereaved family. Among them are the historic Dhodang Bor Namghar Samaj, Srimanta Sankardev Public Namghar, Assam Press Correspondents’ Union Golaghat District Committee, Assam State Journalists’ Association, and others. They all offered prayers for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
