GUWAHATI: The five newly elected MLA's of Assam who emerged victorious in the recently concluded by-elections are scheduled to take the oath of office today. One candidate from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), three from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and one from the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) are among the winners.

After legislators elected to the Lok Sabha vacated their seats, by-polls were held for the Assembly constituencies of Dholai, Behali, Samaguri, Bongaigaon, and Sidli. Samaguri, a seat previously held by the Congress, was won by Diplu Ranjan Sarmah, and the BJP won Dholai, Behali, and Samaguri seats. The UPPL won Sidli by a margin of 37,016 votes, while the AGP won Bongaigaon with Diptimayee Choudhury as the victor.

Congress failed to win any of the five seats it ran for. Tanzil Hussain, son of Rakibul Hussain, lost to the BJP in Samaguri.

The BJP-led coalition's hold on power in the Assam Assembly is further cemented by the by-election results.
