MANGALDAI: Octogenarian lady Swarna Lata Devi of Ward No. 4, Shantipur of Mangaldai town is no more. Following old-age ailment, she, at the age of 88 years, breathed her last on the morning of January 19 at her residence. She was the eldest daughter of Teacher Tara Nath Sarma and Champa Devi of village Gormari Gaon in Morigaon district. She tied the nuptial knot with Sub Inspector of Police Harendra Nath Sarma of Chenga Bohori in Barpeta district. After her husband rendered his sincere service as the Officer-in-Charge of various Police Stations namely Kalaigaon, Mazbat, Dhekiajuli, Bokajan, Diphu, Howraghat etc., finally they settled in Shantipur of Mangaldai.
Though she was the wife of a dedicated and people friendly police officer, yet during their days in Kalaigaon Police Station, she took an active role in the AASU-led historic Assam Movement along with her daughters and the only son. She was actively involved with Uttar Mangaldai Shiva Mandir and earned a good name as a ‘Namati’. In 1998, she faced a tragic chapter in her conjugal life as she lost her husband.
Late Swarna Lata Devi has left behind six daughters and son-in-laws, a son and a daughter-in-law and a number of grandchildren including artiste of repute, Shyamantika Sarma.
