SIVASAGAR: In response to recent protests organized by members of the ONGC Purbanchal Employees’ Association (OPEA) at the company’s Assam Asset in Nazira, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has issued an official statement countering several allegations while reiterating its long-term commitment to Assam through continued investment in local communities and employment.
The sit-in protest, led by OPEA members, primarily concerns the discontinuation of a specific category of overtime payment which, according to ONGC, was not eligible under current guidelines. The company highlighted that it has been incurring financial losses in its Assam operations for the past several years, attributing this to a combination of low production output and a disproportionately high workforce.
Responding to allegations that medical facilities for employees have been withdrawn, ONGC stated that these claims are inaccurate. The company has transitioned from a direct credit system to a reimbursement model for medical expenses. This move aims to prevent misuse of a unique welfare provision extended to both serving and retired employees.
Despite financial challenges and increasing production costs in the region, ONGC emphasized its continued presence and investment in Assam. The corporation highlighted a range of ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, and skill development. A key example is the Siu-Ka-Pha Hospital in Sivasagar, which serves as a vital healthcare facility for the local population.
Industry analysts have observed that while the current operational changes may cause short-term disruptions, they are necessary to ensure long-term sustainability of ONGC’s presence in the state. The company confirmed that communication lines remain open with employee representatives and that efforts are ongoing to address concerns through constructive dialogue.
This clarification was issued in a press communique by the Corporate Communications Department of ONGC, Assam Asset.
