GUWAHATI: Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIDUF) staged a protest against the Assam cabinet's decision on removing the language paper from the state-based exam of APSC, Assam Public Service Commission.

The change also says that only residents of Assam can apply for the APSC exam from now onwards.

On Friday 26 November, the opposition parties of Assam mainly Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) condemned the recent development by the Cabinet according to which the language paper has been withdrawn from the tests of Assam Public Service Commission (APSC).

The opposition parties regard this new change in language paper as 'unfortunate and a threat to the Assamese language.'

The MLAs of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) led a protest before the main entrance of the Assam Legislative Assembly mentioning that the BJP government has disrespected the culture and language of Assam with the cabinet's decision as it did on the proposal of CAA, Citizenship Amendment Act.

Senior Congress leader and an MLA from the Naoboicha constituency, Bharat Narah urged the Assam government that the decision of removing the language paper from APSC needs to be withdrawn within the time period of 72 hours.

Narah added that all the states in India have made the language paper compulsory in the civil service examinations and even in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) the candidates need to appear in one of the 22 languages listed in the 8 Schedule. He said therefore it's confusing to understand why the cabinet has taken such a decision.

He further stated that the Assam government owed the people of Assam a clarification and explanation as to why it has taken away the language paper from the test conducted for the Assam Civil Service Commission. The opposition parties of Assam declare the cabinet's decision as unfit for the state.

Narah said that the government has made Assamese mandatory in schools across the states and also promised for the protection of jati-mati-bheti (community, land, based) so the people of Assam want to know the reason why and for whom it took the step of removal of the language paper.

On Thursday 25 November other regional parties of the state such as Assam Jatiya Parishad and Raijor Dol also criticized the cabinet's decision saying it is dangerous and 'like to invite more persons from outside the state to appear in the APSC exam'.
