Assam: Painting Competition held in Memory of Hemchandra Barua in Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR: To commemorate the 189th birth anniversary of Bhaxar Oja Hemchandra Barua, the creator of the Hemkosh Dictionary, a painting competition was organized at the Rasaraj Lakshminath Bezbarua Park, Amolapatty, in Sivasagar on Sunday. The event saw enthusiastic participation from numerous students representing various schools across Sivasagar.
Jointly organized by the Sivasagar Newspaper Distributors’ Association and the Amolapatty Traders’ Association, the event began with a ceremonial lamp-lighting and floral tribute before the bust of Hemchandra Barua.
On behalf of the organizing committee, secretary Raju Nath highlighted the significance of the occasion. Prominent speakers, including senior citizens, writers, and social figures such as Hema Barua, Dr. Jehieruddin Khan, Ankush Dutta, Niharika Hussain, Aparna Bharali, and Manik Bhadra, delivered brief speeches during the event. Krishna Goswami, executive president of the Newspaper Distributors’ Association, also shared a few words of appreciation.
It is noteworthy that the main celebration of Hemchandra Barua’s birth anniversary is scheduled to take place on December 10 at the Hemchandra Barua Memorial Park in Amolapatty, Sivasagar. The event will honour the legacy of Hemchandra Barua, a pioneer in Assamese scientific thinking, social reform, and the fight against superstitions.
