Assam: People Engaged Under the Mid-Day Meal Scheme Stage a Protest

BISWANATH: The members of the All Assam Mid-day Meal Employees Union staged a protest outside the office of the Sarbasiksha Abhiyan in Biswanath on Saturday.

The protest mounted by the members of the All Assam Mid-day Meal Employees Union was supported by the local unit of the Center of Indian Trade Unions. More than three hundred cooks and helpers engaged in various schools in the district took part in the massive protests staged at the gates of the office of the coordinator of the project. The protesters also engaged in sloganeering against the concerned officials as well as the state government.

The All Assam Mid-day Meal Employees Union demanded that the due payments for the cooks and helpers be made immediately. They also demanded that the remuneration be paid within the very first of the next month and the increment of the minimum wage to Rs 10000 per month according to the laws. They also demanded that those losing the job for any reason be given the one-time compensation of Rs 3 Lakhs immediately.

The protesters also demanded the payment of medical allowance to these employees who suffered injuries during work. They also demanded that wages be paid for all 12 months of the year and that the government stop all attempts at privatisation of the midday meal scheme. The protesters of the All Assam Mid-day Meal Employees Union and the Center of Indian Trade Unions later submitted a memorandum to the chief minister of the state via the Mission coordinator for Biswanath district.

Like other parts of the State, the Naduar Regional Committee of Midday Meal Employees Union staged agitation in front of the office of the Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO), Naduar in support of their charter of demands. The demonstrators shouted slogans in favour of their long pending demands including release of pending salaries, increment, regularization of jobs etc. At the end of the demonstration, the demonstrators locked the door of the office.
