GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that infrastructure projects worth approximately Rs. 1 lakh crore are in various stages of development in the state. Speaking at a press briefing in New Delhi, he stated that the state government is working to secure approvals for several key projects by February 25.
CM Sarma shared that he had discussed numerous crucial infrastructure initiatives with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The list of the projects is extensive. We have requested the PM to consider several key projects. The PM has assured us that the projects, albeit not all, would be undertaken,” Sarma said.
One of the major projects under consideration is an express highway connecting Guwahati to Silchar in Barak Valley via Barapani in Meghalaya, with an estimated cost of Rs. 25,000 crore.
“Should this project receive central government approval and implementation, the journey duration between Guwahati and Silchar will be substantially reduced. People will be able to travel to Silchar from Guwahati and return the same day. We have requested the PM’s consideration for this project,” he elaborated.
Another significant proposal is a bridge over the Brahmaputra River to link Morigaon district on the south bank with Darrang district on the north bank. Sarma also highlighted plans for direct train connectivity between Guwahati and Gelephu in Bhutan, both of which were discussed with the Prime Minister.
The CM highlighted a Rs. 9,000 crore plan to expand Bongaigaon Refinery, an Indian Oil subsidiary in Assam’s Chirang district. He added that PM Modi is expected to lay foundation stones for the Guwahati ring road and a new Brahmaputra bridge in February, with updates on the Gohpur-Numaligarh underwater tunnel and Kaziranga elevated corridor also anticipated.
