Guwahati: Assam Police have destroyed 15 bighas of cannabis cultivation in Assam's Goalpara district, signifying a significant win in the war on drugs.

After receiving information, the illegal crops at Latibari char, Bamunialga char, and Patakata char in Goalpara district was destroyed.

In reaction to the news, Assam chief minister Himant Biswa Sarma tweeted, "Another big victory accomplished in @assampolice's war against drugs." In the Chunari PS, Goalpara dist, Latibari char, Bamunialga char, and Patakata char, about 15 bighas of cannabis cultivation had been destroyed. Thank you so much for everything. "Keep up the fine work," says the narrator. 

Earlier this year, As part of the Assam government's anti-narcotics drive and efforts to declare the state drug-free, confiscated drugs worth Rs 170 crore were burned in public ceremonies in four districts throughout the state.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the media that the state government has adopted a zero-tolerance stance against the drug problem and illicit drugs trade.

Since the current administration took office on May 10, he added, 874 incidents of drug trafficking have been reported, 1,493 drug traffickers have been arrested, and narcotics worth Rs 170 crore have been recovered across the state. 

Assam Police have acquired 19 kg heroin, 14 kg opium, 1,920 kg morphine, 33,014 poppy straw, 8,276 kg ganja, 67,650 bottles of cough syrup, 12,93,000 high stimulating tablets, Rs 1 crore in cash, foreign currencies equivalent to Rs 13,630, fake Indian currency worth Rs 6.80 lakh, and destroyed cannabis (ganja) plantation in 31 bighas of land, according to Sarma, who also holds the home portfolio. The narcotics were burned in public ceremonies in the districts of Karbi Anglong, Golaghat, Hojai, and Nagaon.
