Assam Police Eliminates Dreaded Dacoit Asa Babu In Encounter in Kharupetia

GUWAHATI: In a major success for the Assam Police in controlling crime in the state, a dreaded dacoit has been killed in an encounter with police in Kharupetia in Assam on Tuesday night.

According to reports, the Darang police last night arrested the notorious dacoit, who has been identified as Asa Babu. Asa Babu had been a major challenge for the police as the department was trying to apprehend the dreaded dacoit since a long time.

According to sources within the police, upon his arrest, Babu tried to attack the police and flee from lawful custody, when the encounter happened. The Darrang Police in retaliatory firings killed the dreaded dacoit.

The sources further added that, Asa Babu was the criminal masterminded behind several high profile robberies that occurred in the district since some years.

It may be noted that, Assam Police in several different encounters managed to eliminate some dreaded dacoits in recent days.

Notably, Bubu Konwar who was a notorious dacoit and was also involved in killing some influential persons, was killed in such an encounter. Apart from these, many alleged criminals received bullet injuries while trying to flee from police custody.

Bubu Konwar, Sivasagar's most wanted feared dacoit, was assassinated in a shootout with police near Geleky. He claimed to have killed 42 people over the years and was responsible for a number of high-profile murders in the state.

According to Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) GP Singh, the dreaded gang kingpin was injured in an encounter near Geleky, which is considered a big accomplishment for the Assam Police. According to the ADGP, the officers brought him to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is also holding the state Home department, has given a go-ahead for the steps taken by the police against such dreaded criminals.
