Assam: Police File Chargesheet Against 24 Persons In Batadrava Police Station Arson Case

Nagaon: Police have filed the charge sheet against 24 persons in the Batadrava police station in an arson case in Assam's Nagaon district.

As per reports, out of these 24 people, 11 are also those who are currently in police custody.

''The district police would request the trial of the case through fast track court. We have named 24 people on the charge sheet that was filed on Friday. Of them, 11 are in our custody, including two juveniles. The rest of the people are absconding, search is on for them,'' Nagaon Superintendent of Police Leena Doley said.

It is worth noting that on the afternoon of May 21, following a death of a local fish trader Safikul Islam (39) in police custody, an angry mob torched the Batadrava police station. Notably, the Assam Police had allegedly detained fish trader Safikul in the evening, a day before the trader's death.

After Safikul's death, family members had alleged that the police had demanded Rs 10,000 as a bribe to release him. However, when Safikul's wife reached the police station in the morning, she came to know that her husband had been taken to the Nagaon Civil Hospital.

After reaching there, she found that her husband was no more and following this the agitated family set the police station on fire.

After the death of Safikul in police custody, the Director General of Police (DGP) suspended the Officer-In-Charge (OC) of the Batadrava Police Station.

''We are taking the unfortunate death of Safikul Islam very seriously. If there is any mistake on our part, then we will find the culprits and punish them,'' DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahant had said.
