Barpeta: Assam police on Thursday foiled a child marriage attempt and also apprehended two persons in connection with a case of here on Thursday evening.

Reportedly, a minor was set to tie the knot with a youth in the Baghmara Char area of the district.

As police got inputs of the same, they raided the place of marriage and apprehended both bridegroom and their parents.

As per initial reports, it has come to the fore that parents have been booked under sections of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

The bridegroom is Saibur Badshah (bridegroom) while his father is Hussain Ali.

"Some members of the Village Defence Party (VDP) informed us about the marriage and based on that information reached the spot and rescued the minor girl and apprehended the bridegroom and his father. We have produced them before the court and sent them to jail,'' media reports quoted a police official as saying.

It may be noted that the lives of several girls have been ruined as they their marriages were solemnized in their childhood. In one such incident, a 12-year-old girl was going to tie the knot with a 70-year-old man.

The wedding preparations were complete and the bride was also dressed up and got ready. However, at the end of the day, somehow her life was saved.

According to a report by The Mirror, the case is from Kenya, where two months ago, a girl named Amira was going to marry a 70-year-old man.

She was told that his brother was getting married, so the family was going to a town in Kenyan county near the Somalia border to attend the event. Amira was getting ready to attend this wedding and was dressed up in a new dress.

Notably, child marriage has been banned in Kenya since 1990 and because of this, the entire planning was done by deceiving Amira so that she could not oppose it.

Amira's mother died of cancer a year ago, leaving her father alone with the responsibility of raising three children.

Amira was the youngest and only girl. But the father used to live somewhere else in order to earn his bread and butter following the girl's uncle took care of her.

Eventually, Amira was saved from this mess as his brother informed the police about the crime.
