IMPHAL: In a landmark move, Assam Police surrendered two members of the Kangleipak Communist Party – People's War Group (KCP PWG), a Maoist insurgent group, to the Manipur Police on Tuesday.
Officials affirmed the handover, a significant move towards countering the insurgent activity in the state.
The detained militants, Meishnam Bungomacha Singh alias Lakpa and Tekcham Ibomcha Singh were taken into custody in Guwahati before being shifted to Manipur.
They were accompanied by a Manipur Police team to Imphal. Meishnam Bungomacha Singh is a resident of Wangoo Keirap Moirang Haotak Tampha Khunou in Bishnupur District, and Tekcham Ibomcha Singh (42) is a resident of Imphal East's Pukhao Laipham Makha Leikai.
The arrests were made in Guwahati’s Gorchuk area, within the jurisdiction of Gorchuk Police Station in Kamrup Metropolitan District. According to police reports, the duo was actively involved in extorting money, recruiting youths into their underground organization, and participating in arms-related crimes. Their apprehension is expected to deal a serious blow to the militant group’s operations.
In a connected anti-insurgency drive, authorities have also made a formal arrest of four people who are connected with the proscribed KCP (PWG) outfit. These people were suspected of recruiting youths for the group and were identified in a First Information Report (FIR) lodged at the Andro Police Station in Imphal East District.
Earlier, on March 15, 2025, four extortionists linked to the KCP (PWG) were arrested by police in Andro, Imphal East. They were arrested with arms and ammunition. Investigations showed that two of the arrested extortionists had been newly recruited by the militants arrested in Guwahati, further proving their link to the insurgent network.
The successful raid was the outcome of accurate intelligence inputs by Gajraj Military Intelligence. During the night of March 20, Guwahati City Police conducted a coordinated raid at the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) within the jurisdiction of Gorchuk Police Station, and the militants were arrested
