TEZPUR: In an attempt to curb the number of accidents due to drunk driving, bike stunts and speed riding on New Year's Eve, Assam Police have taken several precautionary measures and imposed several restrictions, said Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Tuesday held a press meet at SP office, Sonitpur in the presence of Deputy Commissioner, Deba Kumar Mishra, Superintendent of Police, Sushanta Biswa Sarma, Additional SP, Madhurima Das and Birinchi Borah. He laid stress on a detailed analysis of road accidents to identify causes for corrective measures as well as enforcement of safety measures.

He warned that the drivers of a particular picnic party would be held by the police if they were found consuming liquor and would also face consequences. He also said that the police and transport department officials and respective district administration officials would make visits to all the picnic spots to ensure that no driver could drink liquor. He further said that accident-prone areas in Tezpur like Mission Chariali to BP Tiniali and Paruah Chariali to Kaliabhomora Bridge stretch, Borghat area, Panchmile area, Balipara to Rangapara stretch, Bihaguri, Pithakhowa areas will be given special importance as part of the enforcement drive. He appealed to all who wish to rent a bus for the picnic purpose must ensure that the driver of the bus is not drunk. He also said that there are no restrictions in going to a picnic, enjoying and drinking; however, the driver cannot be intoxicated. Earlier, the DGP held a high-level meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and District Transport Officer, Sonitpur.
