Assam Police Issues Advisory Regarding WhatsApp - Based Impersonation Attacks

WhatsApp - Based Impersonation Attacks Fraudsters gather available information about a particular organization/department and its employees from the official website or gain unauthorized access to the contact list of a senior functionary.

Thereafter, the fraudster gets the name and picture of the senior officer/political executive/constitutional authority of that organization/department obtained from any websites, social media sites, email, messenger app etc., and uses them in order to dupe the subordinates.

The Fraudster starts sending emails/ Whatsapp messages to selected subordinates from the list on the pretext that he is attending a very urgent meeting and is unable to make/take calls and hence, asking a favour from them to purchase Amazon E-gift cards for him or transfer funds by sending a link. Such whatsapp messages will have the Photo of the senior officer/authority as the DP.

Do not fall prey to such emails/messages.

This MO has recently happened by using the photos of senior constitutional authorities in New Delhi, the Chief Minister of a NE state, the Chief Secretary of a NE state, few senior IAS and IPS officers.
