Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, Assam's Director General of Police (DGP), recently presided over a meeting with senior police officers from Guwahati and a number of other districts to discuss steps being taken to combat crime in the area.

The meeting attendees, according to the sources, placed a strong focus on maintaining communication among police officials in all these areas to make it easier to combat crime.

At the conference, it was also decided that no effort would be spared in the pursuit of offenders, regardless of the location of the crime's commission.

According to the sources, the SPs were instructed to maintain close surveillance so that no criminal might escape police capture.

Additionally, the data from the NCRB for 2021 showed that Assam had the highest rate of crime against women in India, with 168.3 incidents per one lakh people. Odisha came in second with 137.8, followed by Delhi with 147.6.

Additionally, the data revealed that Assam has continued the trend of registering an increase in these offenses after a decline the year prior.

Although slightly higher than the 73.7 cases in 2020, the crime number of 76.6 cases per one lakh people does not provide the full picture, according to Assam police authorities.

The number was ascribed to the high reporting and registration of incidents, particularly in crimes against women.
