DIBRUGARH: An Assam Police officer sustained serious injury after he was attacked by suspected Naga miscreants while carrying out a vehicle theft operation on January 7 at Yachang C Village in Nagaland. At about 8 p.m., a police team led by Officer-in-Charge Gangaram Phukan of Teok and Selenghat police outposts, in the company of Jatin Bora, conducted a raid in the border village.

The situation took a worse turn when the police team was surrounded by local residents, which led to an assault involving sharp weapons. Officer Gangaram Phukan received severe injuries and was taken directly to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where he remains in critical condition.

This has caused a serious concern over the safety of police personnel during inter-state operations, especially in the border areas close to Assam and Nagaland. Such incidents have highlighted the need for improved coordination between the authorities of Assam and Nagaland to ensure the safety of law enforcement officers while operating in volatile areas.

The law enforcement agencies have started a process of investigations to identify and apprehend the culprits. Operational protocols are also reviewed to enhance security measures before dispatching teams to conduct cross-border missions.

The case highlights the problems faced by police teams while operating at sensitive border locations and calls for inter-state cooperation with proper planning to avoid a repetition of this event.
