DHUBRI: On Monday, police in Bilasipara, Dhubri district, confiscated a huge amount of rice that was intended for public distribution from a tractor that was reportedly being transported to the black market for sale.

The tractor, which was carrying 100 bags of rice, was intercepted by the police while it was on its way to deliver the rice to a different location.

The rice was being diverted from Nayer-Alga Cooperative Society to the sar (sandbar) region for sale on the black market, despite the fact that it was intended for distribution under the public distribution system (PDS), according to reports.

Source also alleged and raised questions about the involvement of officials from the Bilasipara Sub-divisional Supply department, who are alleged to have hand in glove, so turned a blind eye to the black marketing of rice in the area. The police have seized the tractor and are investigating the matter, source said.
