Silchar: In a major crackdown on narcotics smuggling, Assam Police recovered 20,000 Yaba tablets and 216 grams of heroin during two separate operations in Cachar district, officials confirmed on Tuesday. Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the seizures.
According to Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta, the district police, acting on credible intelligence inputs, launched special operations on Monday evening at Sonabarighat (under Silchar Police Station) and Hmarkhawlen (under Lakhipur Police Station) to intercept the illicit drug consignments. “During the operations, we recovered 18 soap cases containing heroin (weighing approximately 216 grams) and 20,000 Yaba tablets. Two vehicles used in the transportation of these substances were also seized,” said SP Mahatta.
The arrested accused have been identified as Ayesha Begum Chaudhary, Muslima Begum Mazumder, Jalal Ahmed Chaudhary, Rabijul Ali Chaudhary, and Lalpu Singsit.
SP Mahatta further informed that the seized narcotics are estimated to be worth around ₹7 crore in the black market. Drug detection kits confirmed the presence of heroin and methamphetamine, and the seizures were made in the presence of independent witnesses. “Further investigation into both cases is underway,” he added.
In a separate case, the police had seized three gold biscuits weighing 439 grams and apprehended a suspect on July 21 during an operation near the Ramnagar bypass under Silchar Police Station. The arrested individual was identified as Khamneu Munluah (32), a resident of Lamka, Churachandpur district, Manipur. The gold was allegedly being smuggled from Manipur for delivery near ISBT, Silchar. “The seizure was conducted based on specific intelligence and in the presence of independent witnesses,” SP Mahatta said.
Both operations mark Assam Police’s ongoing efforts to combat drug and gold smuggling networks in the region.
