Assam: Police Seizes 1483 Kilograms of Ganja in Kokrajhar, One Held

GOSSAIGAON: Assam Police on Thursday was successful in seizing 270 packets of Ganja weighing 1483 kilograms from a vehicle in Gossaigaon in Assam's Kokrajhar district.

"We received a human intel of a vehicle that was loaded with Ganja and accordingly we launched an operation and was able to get hold of the vehicle and the heaps of Ganja that the vehicle was carrying", said a police official.

The Police were also successful in arresting the accused and have taken him into custody for further interrogation.

Last week too in a similar case, 45 kilograms of Ganja was seized from a southbound train in Assam's Hojai and six individuals related to the drug case were apprehended by the police.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, after taking over the reins of the state from Sarbananda Sonowal in 2021, has taken a strict stand against drug peddling and has asked the police not to spare a single drug peddler in the state.

Hojai also witnessed a similar drug-related activity a few months ago this year in March, when Heroin worth 3 crores were seized from a Guwahati-bound train that was coming from the business hub of Nagaland, Dimapur.

Northeast has gained a very bad name of being the drug corridor of the country as drugs from southeast Asia move through the northeast to other parts of India.

Assam is headed towards a drug-free future under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. CM Sarma, a few days ago in the Autumn session of the Assam Assembly said that the Assam Police seized drugs worth more than Rs.655 crores and arrested more than 4700 people across Assam in the previous year.

He also added that Assam Government will not show a lenient attitude towards the drug peddlers and will crack down on them heavily if they try to drug our youth.
