MANGALDAI: “Some anti-social elements have been misusing social media against religion and community. Assam Police will not tolerate such practices in this crucial hour of crisis. These elements will be traced out and will be dealt with very severely,” said Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta while talking to media persons here at the police reserve on Saturday during his first visit to the district.

“Assam Police have been adopting new technology for tracing out the contacts of the COVID-19 positive persons of the State and a special team under the supervision of ADGP (STF) is already working on it in coordination with the health department,” he added. Responding to the queries from media persons about the role of the State Government at this critical stage of sudden spread of novel coronavirus, especially linked to the Nizamuddin Markaz congregation, the DGP said “We are taking up the matter very seriously and we are trying to trace out the people coming to Assam from outside.” He also warned the people not to violate the lockdown guidelines. “Lockdown means lockdown. People must abide by the lockdown rules, be it going to mosque for namaaz or naamghar or performing last rites. Anyone who will provoke police by breaking the rules must face the consequences,” he added.

Earlier, the DGP interacted with grassroots-level officers and select staff of Darrang and Udalguri districts and heard their experience in handling the present situation after the outbreak of coronavirus in the State. Darrang Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan also spoke on the occasion and thanked the DGP for boosting the morale of the district police force.
