Assam: Polling teams dispatched across Sonitpur for May 2 Panchayat Election

Ahead of the May 2 Panchayat Election, 842 polling teams with 3,368 personnel in Sonitpur collected materials and headed to their stations.

TEZPUR: As Sonitpur goes to the polls in the first phase of the Panchayat Election 2025 on May 2, a total of 842 polling teams, comprising 3,368 polling personnel along with security staff, collected their required polling materials on Thursday and proceeded to their designated polling stations across the five Legislative Assembly Constituencies (LACs) in the district. Out of the total 842 polling stations, 68 have been designated as all-women polling stations: 8 in Dhekiajuli LAC, 9 in Barchalla LAC, 41 in Tezpur LAC, and 10 in Rangapara LAC.

As per arrangement, Barchalla LAC (261 polling stations), Tezpur LAC (169 polling stations), Rangapara LAC (204 polling stations), and Naduar LAC (2 polling stations) have their distribution/collection centre set up at Darrang College Field. Dhekiajuli LAC (206 polling stations) has its distribution/collection centre at LOKD College, Dhekiajuli.

The district comprises five Legislative Assembly Constituencies — Dhekiajuli, Barchalla, Tezpur, Rangapara, and Naduar. Among the 20 Zila Parishad seats, candidates in 5 seats have been declared unopposed. Therefore, elections will be held for 15 seats, with 41 candidates in the fray. For the 88 Anchalik Panchayat seats, 36 have been declared unopposed, and elections will be held for the remaining 52 seats, with 155 contesting candidates. In the case of 880 Ward Member seats, 260 have been declared uncontested, 3 seats received no nominations, and elections will be held for the remaining 617 seats, with 1,769 candidates contesting.

A total of 6,16,946 electors — Male: 3,07,523, Female: 3,09,409, and Others: 14 — are scheduled  to cast their votes on May 2, between 7:30am and 4:30pm.
