DHUBRI: An interesting poll battle seems to be on the cards in Golokganj, one of the five assembly constituencies in Dhubri district. Golokganj Assembly Constituency is bounded by international border with Bangladesh, inter-State border with West Bengal and inter-district border with Kokrajhar. A total of seven candidates are contesting from this constituency, but as of now, the real fight seems to be between three candidates.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ashwani Roy Sarkar is the sitting legislator and he is putting in every effort to retain the seat. The Congress meanwhile, changed its candidate and fielded Abdus Sobhan Ali Sarker instead of Abu Taher Bepari, who won twice from this seat. After being denied ticket by Congress, Abu Taher Bepari is contesting as an independent candidate, reportedly with a strong fan base and followers.

Bepari was a Congress candidate who was defeated by BJP's Ashwani Roy Sarkar by a narrow margin of votes in 2016. He had joined the BJP but after one-and-half years, his honeymoon with the BJP was over. He returned to the Congress in 2018.

In the last 35 years, this assembly constituency has been represented by the CPI, Congress and BJP. CPI candidate Allauddin Sarkar contested from this constituency thrice till BJP candidate Dinesh Chandra Sarkar won in 2001, but lost to Congress candidate Abu Taher Bepari in 2006 and 2011. BJP candidate Ashwani Roy Sarkar defeated Abu Taher Bepari of the Congress in 2016.

In the massive wave of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP retained this seat in 2016 and sitting legislator Ashwani Roy Sarkar has been fielded again from this constituency.

In Golokganj constituency, there are 2,03,000 electorates, of which 25,300 are first-time voters. Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other BJP leaders have already campaigned for Ashwani Roy Sarkar, while Congress leader Ripun Bora and others held rallies in favour of Congress candidate Abdus Sobhan Ali Sarker.
