DARRANG: A commemorative postal stamp was launched on Tuesday in Patharughat, Darrang district, marking the 131st anniversary of the historic event that took place on January 28, 1894, as a significant tribute to the Patharughat Peasant Uprising. The five-rupee stamp honors the farmers who resisted British colonial injustices.

The initiative was organized by the Department of Agriculture and Horticulture, in collaboration with the Darrang district administration and local citizens, who observed the day as ‘Krishak Swahid Divas’ to pay homage to the peasant martyrs. Approximately one lakh stamps were printed as part of this commemorative effort.

Dilip Saikia, BJP Assam state president and Lok Sabha member for the Darrang Udalguri constituency, also attended the function and declared that he would raise his voice in parliament to declare Patharughat as a national monument site. He emphasized the importance of the movement and said, "Around 25 years before the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the Patharughat Peasant Uprising displayed the boldness of peasants in 1894." Saikia informed that he has drawn up a private member's bill in Parliament to push for this cause.

The revolt left 140 peasants dead, shot at the command of JR Berington, officiating commandant of the military police, when protesting against the rise in land revenue. The stamp release was met with gratitude by family members of the martyrs who said that the gesture was a long overdue tribute to their ancestors who laid down their lives in India's struggle for freedom.
