NAGAON: Preparations for the formation of Gaon Panchayats have begun in Nagaon district, with the election of presidents and vice-presidents for 164 Gaon Panchayats starting from Wednesday.
The elections were to be held at the Block Development Office level, where the elected members of the Gaon Panchayats would gather to choose their respective presidents and vice-presidents.
The Block Development Officers and other government officials were entrusted with the responsibility of conducting the elections. The President was to be elected through a nomination process, and if there were multiple candidates, voting would be held. In case of a tie, the President would be decided by a lottery system.
The election of Gaon Panchayat presidents generated significant interest, with some members approaching ministers, MLAs, and party leaders to secure support. The position of Gaon Panchayat President comes with significant powers and access to government funds, making it a coveted post.
It’s worth noting that unlike previous elections, this year’s Gaon Panchayat presidents’ elections will be held indirectly, with the presidents being elected from among the elected members of the Gaon Panchayat.
