Assam: Prime Accused of DU Ragging Incident Surrenders

DIBRUGARH: Rahul Chetry, the main accused of the Dibrugarh University ragging incident surrendered to Assam Police today morning. He surrendered at the Lekhapani Police Station located in the Tinsukia District of Assam on December 5.

The ex-student of Dibrugarh University was named as the main accused by the victim who suffered severely in the incident. Following this, the police and administration took strict steps towards ample punishment of all the miscreants. But Rahul Chetry was absconding for a week, leading to a search operation by the police. According to reports, he remained hidden initially in Tinsukia and later in the neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh.

Making a public statement while surrendering, the accused claimed his innocence and mentioned that he had no connection to the incident. He added that he remained in hiding out of fear of life while wishing for a quick recovery for the victim. He also mentioned that he is a student of law and has complete faith in the system. Significantly, he was expelled from the JB Law College, wherein he was undergoing a master's degree in law, after his accused invollvement in the accident.

According to his sister, the victim Anand Sharma expressed his happiness that the main accused was finally arrested by the police and hoped that he will receive proper punishment. She also added that this accused was the one who hit her brother the most. His mother also expressed her wish that all the guilty people should be made an example of so that no one would dare to do any such activities in future.

The police took him to Dibrugarh where the case was registered. Initial questioning was conducted by Dibrugarh Police and he was sent for a formal medical examination before he was produced before the magistrate. Taking about his arrest, an official mentioned that the department is going to ask for five-day judicial remand initially. They will also look into the people who were supporting him to remain in hiding for these days even after knowing what happened.
