SIVASAGAR: Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Geleki town in Sivasagar district on Saturday, demanding immediate government intervention to address the persistent flooding and erosion that have plagued the area for decades. The rally was organized by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Veerangana Mahila Samity, and local residents.
The protesters marched through the town, holding placards and chanting slogans aimed at the government, calling for immediate attention to the dire situation. The protesters alleged that annual flooding caused by four major rivers—the Doikhona, Namdang, Isoi, and Densi, all tributaries of the Brahmaputra—has resulted in devastating consequences for the people in the Geleki area.
The residents said the failure to excavate the rivers has led to significant siltation, making the riverbeds increasingly shallow and prone to overflow during the monsoon season.
"These four rivers have been causing massive destruction to our agricultural lands, homes, and livelihoods year after year. The government's failure to implement proper flood control measures has resulted in widespread displacement and economic hardship for the local population," said AASU Sivasagar district president Manab Hazarika.
Meanwhile, FIRs against Debolal Gorlosa, the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC), and his wife, Kanika Hojai, were filed at Umrangso Police Station on Friday for their alleged role in operating an illegal rat-hole coal mine at Umrangso in the Dima Hasao district of Assam.
