GOALPARA: With the April 2nd elections looming in the horizon, the political situation in the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) is set to change dramatically with strong competition among major political parties. The RHAC, constituted to bring development and preserve the Rabha ethnic identity in Goalpara and Kamrup districts, will conduct elections in its 36 constituencies.

Numal Momin, the Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly and a key BJP leader, showed firm optimism about the prospects of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). He pointed out the strength of the alliance from a public point of view and predicted a clear-cut electoral mandate. As the time for withdrawal of candidature is inching closer, Momin reiterated the call for an aggressive campaign strategy. The result of the polls is scheduled to be declared on April 4, marking a decisive moment for the region.

Momin criticized the Congress party, attributing its decline to poor leadership and ineffective policies. He blamed Congress for creating tensions in the Rabha Hasong region, which he alleges has increased tribal community divisions. Conversely, he commended the BJP government for ensuring peace and giving top priority to stability and development since 2016.

Opposition parties, led by Congress, have countered these claims, alleging that the ruling alliance has neglected pressing local issues and marginalized vulnerable populations. The RHAC elections will see 445,586 eligible voters, including 216,181 men and 229,394 women, participating across 630 polling stations. The nomination period closed on March 15th, with March 19th marking the last day for candidate withdrawals.
