LUMDING: In order to spread awareness about road safety, the Railway Protection Force organised an awareness drive in Lumding of Assam on Sunday. They organised a street drama on the occasion.
The act presented on the street aimed to make people of the locality aware of the possible risks to people trying to cross level crossings even when the gates are closed ahead of approaching trains. The event was organised at the Harulongpher level crossing in Lumding.
Through this drama, they aimed to showcase the problems from such activities and how they put people at risk, including their own as well as that of others. Apart from showcasing what could happen in such a situation, the authorities also pointed out that people ignoring the warnings and crossing the level crossing by going under the gates can be booked under the Railways Act and given de punishment.
Previously the authorities had organised a similar campaign in Guwahati. An awareness campaign was organized by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) teams of Kamakhya Railway Station and Guwahati Railway Station under the supervision of the Inspector Protection Force (IPF). The campaign was organized to make people aware of unauthorised level crossings and railway line crossings. During the campaign, a staff member wore a Yamraj dress while enacting 'Jumraja Act' to attract the public.
Railway level crossings are one of the most significant points of interaction between trains and road vehicles or pedestrians. It is crucial to have safety precautions put in place to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of everyone who uses the crossings.
The need for safety precautions at railway level crossings cannot be overstated. Trains travel at high speeds and can be challenging to stop immediately, requiring a long run-up distance to come to a complete stop. Road vehicles, especially large ones, require considerable time and space to clear the railway tracks. Pedestrians may also be at risk, as they may misjudge train speeds or the time it will take them to cross the tracks.
