Assam: Railway Workers Stage Hunger Strike Against New Pension Policy in Lumding

LUMDING: Employees of the Lumding Railway Board have initiated a hunger strike today, protesting against the central government's new pension policy under the National Pension System (NPS) outside the office of the Divisional Railway Manager of Lumding. The agitation, led by two prominent railway workers' unions, is set to continue until January 11, as workers vehemently express their discontent with the NPS.

The core grievance of the protesting employees centers around the NPS, a policy introduced by the Modi government. Leaders representing the Mazdoor Union and the Employees Union have vocalized their opposition, threatening to rally for the restoration of the old pension system, known as the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).

The Lumding Railway Board employees participating in the hunger strike assert that the NPS fails to adequately address their concerns and demands, leading to their resolute decision to continue the protest for an extended period. The hunger strike, they declare, is a symbolic gesture to emphasize the severity of their dissatisfaction and their determination for change.

Leaders of the Mazdoor Union and the Employees Union have issued a stern ultimatum to the government, emphasizing that unless the demands of the railway workers are met, they are prepared to mobilize their support against the Modi government in the upcoming elections. This threat adds a political dimension to the protest, making it clear that the unions are willing to use electoral pressure to secure their objectives.

The office of the Divisional Railway Manager of Lumding has become the focal point of the protest, with employees gathering to voice their discontent and make their demands heard. The agitation represents a collective outcry against what the workers perceive as unjust and inadequate pension policy.

As the hunger strike unfolds in Lumding, the tension between the railway workers and the government escalates. The outcome of this protest could have significant implications not only for the employees involved but also for the political landscape as the unions threaten to take their cause to the polls.
