Assam: Rape Suspected After Woman's Half-Naked Body Found in Nagaon

NAGAON: On Thursday, a woman's body was discovered in the Nagaon district of Assam in a half-naked condition. The deceased was found behind her house.

Reports claimed that the body of the body was discovered in Samaguri, it was in a half-naked condition in the bushes with a rope around her neck.

According to the reports, she was a widow with two children, and the neighbours gave their statements saying that a person called Mridul Bora raped and killed her. They claimed that the accused used to abuse the deceased for a considerable amount of time and that they had seen him go to her house on Wednesday.

According to the Crime in India 2020 report published by the National Crime Records Bureau, Assam had the highest rate of crime against women at 154.3. This is way higher than the national rate of 56.5. Delhi placed third with 106.4, following Odisha with 112.9.

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) numbers for 2020 show that the state had the highest rate of crimes against women in the nation for the fourth time.

According to a previous report, Assam police believe that the increased reporting of crimes is a result of the state's increasingly empowered women.

According to the police, women in rural areas report fewer crimes because of their fear and financial dependence on their husbands. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), however, more rural than urban women in India's third-most rural state reported marital abuse.

These factors for under-reporting among rural women in Assam, according to a number of women's rights advocates, equally apply to urban Assamese women. According to them, the NCRB data only represent the "tip of the iceberg" when it comes to crimes against women in Assam, and some of the surges in these crimes may be the consequence of a backlash as more and more Assamese women question the state's patriarchal beliefs.
