DIBRUGARH: A camera trap deployed in Dehing Patkai National Park has been able to capture a rare sighting of the Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), a species that is currently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. This notable observation highlights the rich biodiversity found in the national park and the imperative need for continued conservation efforts in the region.

The Clouded Leopard is a reclusive creature and predominantly resides in the forest canopy of the eastern Himalayas, Northeast India, and Southeast Asia. Its presence in Dehing Patkai National Park is a heartening indicator of the health and preservation of the ecosystem in the region.

In addition, the camera trap also recorded a rare sighting of the Marbled Cat (Pardofelis marmorata), a near threatened wild cat species according to the IUCN Red List. The rarely seen creature, characterized by its unique coat pattern and reserved nature, typically dwells in forests of the eastern Himalayas and Southeast Asia. The record reflects the conservation status of the Marbled Cat within the biodiversity hotspot.

Besides, a Wildlife Trust of India team recently spotted a rare pair of white-winged ducks (Asarcornis scutulata), which are listed as endangered, in the park. At the same time, there have been concerns about the invasive Crocodile Catfish that have been sighted in the Bahini River, which threatens native aquatic life.

The State Fishery Department is conducting samples to evaluate the possible impact of this invasive species on the biodiversity of Assam, stressing the need for protective action at the earliest.
