GUWAHATI: A Himalayan Griffon vulture was found in a vulnerable condition near the River Gaurang in Kawanbari area of Assam's Dhubri district. It may be noted that this bird species has become increasingly rare in the region.

The seemingly weak vulture was unable to fly properly and was clearly not at its optimal state which raised serious concerns among locals and conservationists.

According to eyewitnesses, the vulture was initally mistaken for an injured bird before it was identified as a Himalayan Griffon (Gyps himalayensis), a species found in high-altitude regions.

The concerned villagers informed the local wildlife authorities about the dire condition of the bird, following which, immediate action was taken.

It is worth mentioning that the Himalayan Griffon plays a critical role in maintaining the ecosystem as it contributes in natural waste disposal by feeding on carcasses.

However, the population of this rare species is shrinking as a result of habitat destruction, food scarcity, and exposure to harmful substances, particularly the veterinary drug diclofenac, which is the primary reason behind several vulture deaths across South Asia.

It has been speculated by widlife experts that starvation, dehydration, or poisoning from contaminated food sources could also be the reason behind the bird’s distress.

"This sighting is both significant and alarming. The vulture's weakened state indicates possible environmental challenges that need urgent attention," said a local conservationist. The locals have been told to refrain from disturbing the vulture.
