DIBRUGARH: The Food, Public Distribution & Consumer Affairs Department in Dibrugarh district, led by Inspectors Kamal Kalita and Bhaben Kumar, sealed M/s Shah Refuelling Station, a retail outlet dealing in Motor Spirit (Petrol) and High Speed Diesel, located at Bongalgaon, after a departmental inspection team found irregularities during a probe into alleged fuel adulteration.
Acting on public complaints and under the directive of Dibrugarh District Commissioner Bikram Kairi, the department has intensified inspections at petrol and diesel pumps to ensure consumers receive unadulterated fuel and the correct quantity.
During the inspection, the team found that the proprietor of the refuelling station failed to produce mandatory documents, including a valid license under the Assam Trade Articles Order, 1982, fire safety certificates, and other required records. Consequently, the inspection team sealed the fuel station and imposed a restriction on its operation until all necessary documents were submitted.
The inspection team, led by Inspectors Kamal Kalita and Bhaben Kumar, also collected fuel samples from the station for further investigation into potential adulteration.
A contaminated fuel incident took place at the depot where several vehicles were inadvertently filled with water instead of petrol on Tuesday night. According to reports, the contaminated fuel led to the breakdown of numerous two-wheelers, many of which stalled mid-journey, forcing owners to push their vehicles off the road.
Following complaints from the affected consumers, sale was stopped in the depot. The depot authorities have since drained water from the fuel tanks of the damaged vehicles and initiated repairs. The incident sparked outrage among the public, with many expressing strong dissatisfaction. Dibrugarh Police then arrived at the depot to take stock of the situation. “I filled petrol from the dept but after some time, my vehicle’s engine seized on the way. I reported the incident to the petrol pump owner and he assured me the repair of my vehicle,” said a consumer.
