Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today paid rich tributes to the state's freedom fighters who valiantly took part in the Quit India Movement 1942.

Notably, today is marked as a historic day as Assam witnessed tears and blood as it's leaders fought the British during the 1942 Quit India Movement.

Assam CM Sonowal took to social media to recall the sacrifice made by great leaders for the freedom of the country.

In his tweet, he mentioned about the freedom fighters Kanaklata Baruah,Mukunda Kakati, Bhogeswari Phukanani and Tileswari Barua who played a crucial role during the Quit India Movement in 1942.

They are prominent leaders from Assam who made significant contribution to the movement and were also arrested within days of adopting the movement.

The Quit India Movement in Assam took place at Kamrup, Nagaon, Darrang, Sivasagar, Golaghat, and Barpeta. 

It is to be mentioned that several Assamese women, who were members of the Mrityu-Bahini or Santi-Sena were the backbone of the movement.

Lost in the pages of Assamese history, Kanaklata Barua is remembered as the youngest freedom fighter from Assam.
