GUWAHATI: In a significant recognition of his exceptional contributions, Dr. Ravi Kannan, a distinguished oncologist based in Assam, has been announced as one of the four laureates of the esteemed 2023 Ramon Magsaysay Award. Currently serving as the director of the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC) situated in Silchar, Assam, Dr. Kannan's efforts have revolutionized cancer care in the region.

With a notable accolade to his name, Dr. Kannan has been honored previously with India's esteemed Padma Shri award, a testament to his commitment and excellence in the medical field. Notably, he is the first medical practitioner from the northeastern region of India to be bestowed with the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award, often referred to as the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

Dr. Kannan's response to this achievement humbly underscores his dedication to the hospital and its noble cause. He regards the award as a tribute to the collaborative efforts of the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre's entire team, consisting of over 450 colleagues. The hospital, established by a not-for-profit society, has been instrumental in enhancing the lives of individuals battling cancer.

Expressing his thoughts, Dr. Kannan emphasized the need for holistic cancer care. He stressed the significance of prevention, treatment, and the overall patient experience. While emphasizing the importance of adequate infrastructure and cutting-edge equipment, he also highlighted the critical role of continuous human resources support.

”The award is not about myself but about many people including 450 colleagues of the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, whose contribution is immense, and the not-for-profit society that set it up,” Kannan told the media.

”The award belongs to many people, the hospital and the community who have joined hands to make lives better for those suffering from cancer and I am just one of the many faces involved in this effort,” he said.

”We have to go near people and focus on prevention, treatment and cancer care. We need a lot of support for infrastructure and equipment, which are one-time investments, but what we need most is human resources which is a recurring requirement”, the oncologist said.

Acknowledging the vital role of governmental assistance, Dr. Kannan commended the unwavering support of both state and central authorities. Initiatives such as Atal Amrit Abhyan have extended valuable healthcare provisions to underserved communities, improving access to better treatments.

Dr. Kannan's passion for his mission shines through as he articulates his profound aspiration. He strives to ensure that no individual's battle with cancer is devoid of dignity. Drawing from his rich background as the child of an Indian Air Force personnel, Dr. Kannan's journey began as a surgeon at the Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai. His path led him to Silchar in 2007, where he founded the Cachar Cancer Hospital alongside his wife.

Dr. Ravi Kannan's recognition as a Ramon Magsaysay Award recipient underscores his unwavering commitment to the betterment of cancer patients' lives. His journey, from a dedicated surgeon to the visionary leader of CCHRC, is an inspiring testament to the power of collaborative healthcare initiatives that uplift and transform communities.
