GUWAHATI: On a somber morning at Guwahati's Hengrabari, the world bid farewell to the renowned Tokari Geet artist, Umakanta Bairagi, who passed away at the age of 80. The news of his demise was met with sadness and grief as he had been battling a prolonged illness. His last moments were peacefully spent at his residence, where he breathed his last at 7.10 am on Wednesday.

Umakanta Bairagi was a legendary figure in the world of traditional Assamese music, particularly known for his mastery in Tokari Geet, a unique form of folk singing accompanied by a string instrument called "Tokari." Born in 1942 in Dibrugarh, Assam, he demonstrated exceptional talent and passion for music from a young age.

Throughout his illustrious career, Umakanta Bairagi received numerous accolades and recognition for his exceptional contributions to Assamese folk music. One of the most prestigious honors he received was the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, which further solidified his position as a stalwart in the cultural landscape of the state.

In addition to the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, he was also the proud recipient of other distinguished awards, such as the Pratima Pandey Award and the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Sanghati Award.
