Guwahati: The dreaded coronavirus has claimed 4 more lives in Assam on Monday (August 3), stated health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. With these latest deaths, the number of casualties in the state due to the viral disease has risen to 109.

The persons who passed away today due to complications from the disease, hail from the districts of Kamrup (M), Sivasagar, Tinsukia, and Dibrugarh.

Paying his condolences, Sarma wrote on Twitter, "Always painful to lose your own. Sad at 4 lives lost today due to #COVID19 - Late Subrata Patra (45, Kamrup M); Late Haren Mahanta (65, Sivasagar); Late Sukendra Kumar Tanti (53, Tinsukia); Late Madan Dutta (80, Dibrugarh). My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families."

Yesterday also, the coronavirus death toll in the state had been reported as 4. "Four more #COVID19 patients have succumbed to their infections today~ Late Mridula Ghosh (54) of Karimganj, Late Tilak Chandra Das (50) of Kamrup Metro, Late Santa Sarkar (62) of Tinsukia and Late Samir Phukan (52) of Jorhat. Condolences to their families. Prayers", Biswa Sarma wrote in a tweet.

With the rise in the number of infections in the state, the number of fatalities from the infectious disease has also started clambering up. However, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the health minister, maintains that the fatality rate in Assam remains "low."

 The COVID-19 mortality rate of Assam continues to be the lowest in the country, Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed to mediapersons on Sunday, August 2.

"COVID-19 mortality rate of Assam is 0.24 percent, which is the lowest in the country," Sarma said, while addressing the media in Guwahati on Sunday. He added that Assam is followed by Kerala and Tripura.
