Guwahati: A case has been registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with an alleged recruitment scam in Assam Rifles in the Jorhat district of Assam.

The CBI registered this case under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Indian Penal Code, and Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 at its ACB Office in Guwahati on 28 December.

This case had been originally registered by the Assam Police at the Jorhat Police Station in 2019. The case has been transferred to the CBI upon request from the state government.

According to the FIR, a department inquiry by the vigilance branch of the Assam Rifles in Shillong had found that Yashwant Kumar, a teacher hailing from the Vaishali district in Bihar, was playing the role of a middleman.

It had also been found that he conspired with certain personnel of Assam Rifles including some doctors to get aspirants recruited into the forces in return for bribes.

"Yashwant Kumar in connivance with some unknown Assam Rifles used to bring aspirants for recruitment at Jorhat during the recruitment rally and deliver bribe money to the officers of the unknown officials of Assam Rifles including doctors of Assam Rifles," the CBI's FIR copy stated.

The practice of offering bribes in return for jobs is not a new concept in the state. In fact, it is prevalent throughout the country starting from the top to the bottom.

Both, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have vowed to eradicate corruption. Both of them have undertaken stern measures to tackle this problem.

For instance, the Assam CM had announced strict measures against anyone convicted of bribery.
