Assam Rifles Seized Areca Nuts Worth Rs 1 Crore In NH37

GUWAHATI : Assam Rifles personnel, under the supervision of Headquarter Inspector General of Assam Rifles, seized 500 bags of areca nuts worth Rs 1 crore. The recovery and interception was made by the Srikona Battalion of Headquarter 21. 

The Assam Rifles based on a prior information regarding movement of illicit items on the national highway 37, initiated an operation in that area.

The operation led to the confiscation of approximately 40,000 kg of areca nuts packed in 500 bags. The contraband was found in two trucks. Both the loaded vehicles along with 5 people were handed over to the Manipur police department for further investigation process.

According the sources, this operation conducted by the Assam Rifles will facilitate in eliminating the unlawful activities of smuggling along with restricting any sort of financial support provided to the insurgents in the form of extortion from these illicit activities.

On 7th January, Assam Rifles in association with the Mizoram Police found war like stones near BP 15 in Saiha district in the Indo-Myanmar border. The items were later handed over to the Phura police station.

Notably, recovery of war like stones in Mizoram is currently a major cause of concern for the state. On December last year, under the supervision of Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East), Lunglei Battalion recovered massive amount of war like stones in the region.

The search operation was conducted at Kakichhua village based on a prior information. The northeast stated are continuously trying to nab smugglers and seize contraband that are being transferred in the state.

The ongoing drug activities in the region is a growing concern as it is affecting the youths in large. On Wednesday, Manipur seized heroine worth Rs 8 crore and apprehended two smugglers for the same. The drugs were packed in 100 soup cases in an eco sports car.
