Morigaon: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing of Assam Police on Tuesday apprehended a headmaster for allegedly taking a bribe from a teacher to upgrade Service Book in Assam's Morigaon district.

According to Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Gyanendra Pratap Singh, the headmaster of the Hatimuria Govt MV School under Laharighat block was red-handed while allegedly taking a bribe from a fellow teacher.

Singh further claimed that the headmaster had sought a bribe to upgrade the Service Book and LPC (Last Pay Certificate).

''Relentless campaign. Sri Didarul Islam, Head Teacher of Hatimoria MV School Moirabari, of Morigaon district has been trapped and arrested red handed today by team of @DIR_VAC_ASSAM while accepting demanded money for updating service sheet and LPC. @assampolice @CMOfficeAssam,'' he tweeted.

On August 18, a Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO) of Rani in the Kamrup district, Lachit Basumatary, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe for processing the transfer application of a teacher.

According to sources, Basumatary was arrested after the husband of the teacher in question lodged a complaint with the V&AC that the BEEO had demanded a bribe for processing pending transfer-related work.

A trap was accordingly laid near the office of the BEEO and Basumatary was caught red-handed in his office chamber along with the bribe amount.

The bribe amount was seized from Basumatary's possession in the presence of independent witnesses.

As per the sources, during the further search of his personal Bolero vehicle, an amount of Rs 1 lakh in cash was recovered by the V&AC team.

The sources further informed that a case (28/2022 u/s 7(a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) has been registered in the ACB Police Station against Basumatary.

Prior to this, Guru Prasad Khataniar, Registrar, Bhattadev University, Pathsala, Bajali, district was also nabbed while accepting bribe.

Notably, in the month of August, the officials of the Vigilance & Anti-Corruption has made a significant mark in unearthing the corroupt state government officials.

On August 3, a special team from the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, caught Forest Ranger Debabrata Gogoi of Lakshipur, Cachar District while taking bribe.

Earlier, the Assam Police has urged citizens of the state to report any kind of monetary demands made by government employees and have also issued two helpline numbers in this regard.

This was announced by Special Director General of Police (DGP) Law and Order, GP Singh on Friday. Citizens have been asked to report bribery cases at the helpline numbers: 0361-2462295 and 1800-3453767.
