GUWAHATI: The entire northeastern region of the country is suffering from a severe heat wave with temperatures above normal at several locations. To that end, the government has decided to change the class timings of schools in the Kamrup Metropolitan district. The order was passed on Wednesday and comes into effect from Thursday.

“In the interest of public wellbeing, the normal school timing is again rescheduled due to continuous rise of Mercury level and prevailing scorching heat for both Govt. Provincialised and private schools under Kamrup Metro district w.e.f Thursday, 3rd Aug ’2023.” said the order issued by the district-level officials of the education department.

As per the order, the new timings of the schools are as follows. Lower Primary Schools 7:30 A.M. to 12:00 Noon, Middle English Schools 7:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M and High Schools and Higher Secondary 7:30 A.M. to 01:00 P.M.

Also, schools have been instructed to conduct the morning assembly inside the classroom or in a shaded area. This order comes to effect on August 3 and will remain in force till August 15.

The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) published its forecast for the month of August, including the Southwest Monsoon predicting above-average temperatures in the region. The rainfall across the country is expected to be normal during the second half of the southwest monsoon in the months of August and September. Normal to above normal rainfall is very likely over most parts of subdivisions adjacent to the Himalayas, East-Central India, and some parts of East and Northeast India. Below-normal rainfall is very likely over most parts of Peninsular India, and Western parts of Northwest and Central India

Monthly rainfall across the country as a whole for August 2023 is very likely to be below normal. During August 2023, normal to above normal rainfall is very likely over most parts of subdivisions adjacent to the Himalayas, East-Central India, and some parts of East and Northeast India. Below normal rainfall is very likely over most parts of the South Peninsula, and many parts of Western parts of Northwest and Central India.
