Assam schools, colleges reopen date: Regular classes will start from Jan 1

Guwahati: Assam education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that all the schools & colleges in the state will reopen from January 1. The schools will resume their regular classes from the very first day of 2021.

He said that the schools and colleges will reopen from January 1, 2021, including the primary schools. When Sarma was asked about the new strain of the novel coronavirus, he said that the government has not yet planned for further lockdown. Sarma assured that there is nothing to worry about.

He further stated that the COVID-19 situation in the state in under control. Assam has been reporting less than 100 cases daily.

As it was earlier reported, the schools in Assam will reopen on January 1, without any restrictions. However, wearing face masks and social distancing is to be maintained in the schools. Other restrictions imposed on educational institutions across the State will be withdrawn. The decision was taken following the less number of COVID-19 cases in the state.

Classes have been going on with a few restrictions since November. The attendance of the students was also seen increasing with lesser number of COVID-19 cases in Assam.

However, what has scared everyone again is the new strain of the novel coronavirus. This new strain is said to be 70 per cent more transmissible. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a woman, who has returned to Assam from the United Kingdom a few days back, have tested positive for the virus. Currently, she is in the isolation ward of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. Reports say that the sample of the returnee is collected and sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for further verification.
