GUWAHATI: In a startling turn of events, Nalbari Police took into custody a Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) from Guwahati on charges of cheating, following a complaint lodged by his fiancé. The accused SDO has been identified as Samiran Das, previously stationed at Guwahati's Hengrabari under the Public Health Engineering Department.

The complainant, a resident of Nalbari, filed her grievance at the Nalbari Police Station, alleging that Das had deceived her. Initial reports suggest that the engagement took place during Das's tenure in Nalbari, and the couple even initiated legal proceedings for a court marriage. However, the situation took an unfortunate turn when Das purportedly asked for an exorbitant dowry of Rs. 1 crore (approximately 10 million rupees) after initiating the court marriage process. The victim claimed to have paid him Rs. 2 lakh (200,000 rupees) as the first installment of this demand.

Trouble ensued as Das allegedly began to distance himself from the complainant, subsequently securing a transfer from Nalbari to Guwahati. Feeling abandoned and wronged, the woman resorted to filing an official complaint with the Nalbari Police. Acting swiftly on her allegations, the Nalbari Police apprehended Samiran Das from his location in Guwahati, intending to present him before the court for further legal action and potential custody.

The victim recounted her side of the story, explaining that her association with the accused SDO began in 2018. Their relationship had progressed to the point of engagement, leading them to involve their families in their plans for marriage. However, the situation took a heartbreaking turn when Das clandestinely moved to Guwahati after receiving a transfer order. Even more shocking was the discovery that he had allegedly established a romantic connection with another woman in his new location.

Adding a layer of complexity to the situation, the victim claimed that Das's family members started demanding dowry, seemingly leveraging their connection to a prominent political figure, Himanta Biswa Sarma, as a deterrent against legal action. This assertion highlighted the societal pressures and power dynamics that sometimes play a role in such cases.

The victim told to the media, “We met in the year 2018 and eventually he confessed that he has feelings for me. We then informed our families and got engaged, however, later without informing us he went to Guwahati on receiving transfer orders.”

“After we came to know that he had formed a connection with another girl in Guwahati, his family members started demanding dowry saying that we cannot file a case against them as they belong to Himanta Biswa Sarma’s constituency,” she added.

As the legal proceedings unfold, this incident underscores the importance of addressing alleged misconduct and exploitation, shedding light on issues like dowry demands and the complexities of personal relationships in contemporary society.
