Assam Senior Police Officer Calls Paresh Baruah A 'Traitor'

New Delhi: Senior police officer of Assam, Jitmal Doley, on Friday called the Commander-in-Chief of banned militant outfit ULFA (I), Paresh Baruah, a traitor of Assam.

Currently serving as Deputy Inspector General of the Eastern Range of Assam, Doley in an exclusive interview with India Today NE, said, ''Paresh Barua is the Badan Barphukan of modern Assam''.

In the 19th century, Badan Barphukan was a general of the Ahom rulers, who had betrayed the kingdom by inviting Burmese to invade Assam.

He called Barua, a traitor while responding to reports which claimed that the militant outfit is working out a plan to assassinate him.

Recently, some reports came to the fore claiming that Doley was likely to be on the hit list of ULFA following a couple of encounters in Tinsukia.

On July 2, a cadre named Gyan Asom was killed in the first encounter in Kakopothar village. Soon after this, on July 9, the banned militant outfit faced each other at Pengeri village.

"Ever since ULFA(I) was banned, they have targeted and ambushed police and army personnel. Whenever ULFA(I) will face losses, they will try to retaliate," Indian Today NE quoted Deuri as saying.

Thinking that these encounters took place over the directions of Doley, ULFA has been planning to assassinate him.

''They have been targeting me since the 1990s when I was serving in Guwahati and lower Assam. So it's not a new thing that they (ULFA) is targetting me,'' Doley added.

He further said that ULFA has sent their cadres to kill me several times, however, their cadres got killed in an encounter.

Later, he also clarified that his comments against the ULFA are his personal opinion and must not be attributed to Assam Police.
