BOKAKHAT: In light of the current national situation, the organizers decided to cancel indefinitely all events related to the Bokakhat Central Spring Festival 2025 and the Bokakhat Station Club Stage Bihu Golden Jubilee Celebrations, which were scheduled to take place over three vibrant days starting May 13.
This announcement was made in a press release issued on Friday and signed by key members of the Bokakhat Central Spring Festival organizing committee, Rajib Bora, Ridip Bhushan Nath, Gitartha Saikia, and Dipankar Hazarika. The press note stated that India was currently facing a serious situation that required confronting the cowardice of a hostile nation with full force. It added that at such a crucial time, both the central and state governments were standing united in defence of the nation’s integrity.
Taking this situation into account, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to the people of Assam to cancel all cultural programmes, including Bihu gatherings and Spring Festivals, starting from May 10.
Responding to this appeal, Atul Bora, President of the Bokakhat Central Spring Festival Celebration Committee, recommended reconsidering the previously scheduled events. This recommendation was made jointly by Bokakhat Station Club, Sammilit Yuva Sangha, Madhya Bokakhat Bihu Sammelan, Nagarik Kalyan Samiti, and the Central Bokakhat Bihu Sammelan.
According to the press note, following guidance from the Assam Cabinet Minister and MLA of the Bokakhat Assembly Constituency, who also serves as the President of the Bokakhat Central Spring Festival Celebration Committee, executive presidents Sanjiv Saikia, Animesh Saikia, and Abhijit Nath immediately convened an emergency meeting at Bokakhat Sadhani Bhawan. In this meeting, it was resolved to indefinitely cancel all events of the Bokakhat Central Spring Festival 2025 and the Bokakhat Station Club Stage Bihu Golden Jubilee, originally scheduled for May 13, 14, and 15, 2025 (corresponding to Bohag 29, 30, and 31 in the Saka calendar year 1947).
The organizers appealed to the people of Bokakhat, Bihu enthusiasts, and well-wishers to support this decision as a responsible and empathetic gesture towards the nation. They affirmed that only when the current situation stabilizes will the committee consider hosting the Spring Festival and national cultural programmes in the future.
Meanwhile, in view of the current war-like conditions facing the country, the prestigious West Bokakhat Bohagi Festival Celebration Committee has also decided to indefinitely postpone the 48th West Bokakhat Bohagi Festival, which was scheduled for May 13 and 14.
This decision was conveyed through a press statement issued on Friday, signed by Akash Phukan (Chief Secretary of the West Bokakhat Bohagi Festival Standing Committee), Pranjal Baruah (President of the Celebration Committee), and Rajani Saikia (Chief Secretary). Expressing deep sorrow, the committee informed the people of Bokakhat Samajila, Golaghat district, and Assam that, in a meeting held on Friday at 11:00 AM, the festival was officially postponed to an indefinite date in the interest of national unity and integrity.
The statement also expressed hope that, should the national situation improve in the future, the West Bokakhat Bohagi Festival Celebration Committee will host a vibrant and joyous festival involving the local community, Bihu lovers, and well-wishers.
