Guwahati: In a tragic development, Dilip Barooah, an Assam entrepreneur who founded the Rudrasagar Silk Limited in Sivasagar district, passed away on Wednesday night at around 11:30 pm due to COVID-19 related complications.

As per reports, Barooah was under treatment for a few days after contracting the disease. The noted entrepreneur finally succumbed to the virus yesterday.

The death of the Assam entrepreneur has been reported amid a rising number of COVID-19 related casualties across Assam.

The persons who passed away due to the infection on Wednesday are: Subhash Ghosh (42), Firoz Hussain (57), Fazaluddin Ahmed (73), Munwara Begum (40), Sigheswar Rai (88), Kalyanbrata Choudhury (50)Bimolendu Chakraborty (84), Bimalnandu Ray (64), Sitangshu Chanda (78), and Ranjana Bhattacharjee (51).

"Very sad and anguished to inform that ten more COVID-19 positive patients have succumbed to the disease", Assam, finance and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a statement. With these 10 fatalities, the death toll has now risen to 213.

It is to be noted that Assam's COVID-19 tally increased to 84,317 on Wednesday with the addition of 2,116 more cases. Of these, around a fourth of the cases (23,753) are active.

Meanwhile, the number of recoveries continues to rise higher with the release of more patients across hospitals from Assam. Yesterday alone, 2,054 patients were discharged after recovering from the virus.

It is to be noted that India on Thursday saw a record spike of 69,652 cases and 977 deaths in the last 24 hours. The Covid-19 tally in the country has now climbed to 28,36,926 including 6,86,395 active cases. The number of cured, discharged, or migrated stands at 20,96,665 while the deaths have risen to 53,866, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.
