Assam: Situation still tense in Morigaon following attack on Hindu family

Despite police deployment restoring normalcy in Garumora Doloni, Jagiroad, Hindu families remain fearful after a fresh stone-pelting incident in Kuchiani.

MORIGAON:  Though the tense situation has returned to normal with the deployment of police personnel at Garumora Doloni under Mayong PS, Jagiroad where a Hindu family was brutally attacked by a group of Bengali-speaking minority Muslim on February 9, the Hindu families are still in fear for life as one stone-pelting incident reportedly took place in the evening at Kuchiani about 8 km away from Garumora Doloni. According to information, a stone was hurled at the wedding car of a Hindu family at Kuchiani in the evening, on the way to Gufali, Mayong from Santoli, Mayong PS. But fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident.

Talking to The Sentinel, the OC, Mayong said, “I am not hundred percent sure over the stone pelting incident, but investigation is on over the incident. I have already appealed to the people to maintain peace to avoid any untoward incident as the situation is tense.”

On the other hand, a total of 20 Hindu families, surrounded by more than 1500 Bengali-speaking minority families, have been living in peace for almost 45 years but the incident hurt the sentiment of the inhabitants, said a member of the victim’s family. One Ramakanta Das (45 years), near Garuamora Doloni, was shifted to a safer place following the disturbance.

Amidst the tense situation, Minister Piyush Hazarika met the victim’s family at Garuamora Doloni and assured them of all help.
