Haflong: Demanding urgent actions to address illegal coal mining and teer gambling in Dima Hasao, the Sixth Schedule Protection Committee submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner of Dima Hasao with copy to the Superintendent of Police, Haflong, Dima Hasao district, Assam for his kind information and necessary action on Wednesday.
The memorandum signed by Daniel Langthasa, Convenor, Sixth Schedule Protection Committee Stated that the Sixth Schedule Protection Committee, is deeply committed to safeguarding the rights, resources, and welfare of the people of Dima Hasao. It brought to urgent attention two critical issues that require immediate intervention: Investigation and immediate halt of illegal coal mining in Umrangso. The illegal rat-hole coal mining activities ongoing in Umrangso have reached an alarming stage. The recent tragedy, which claimed the lives of several workers, has highlighted the dangerous working conditions perpetuated by these unauthorized operations. These activities have social chaos. The unregulated nature of these activities is fueling unrest and societal breakdown in many areas.
They urged to conduct a district-wide crackdown on illegal teer gambling counters and apprehend the operators and bookies involved, and to raise awareness to educate the public, especially the youth, about the dangers of gambling. Strengthen enforcement mechanisms to prevent the resurgence of such activities.
